Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of local SEO for Cyprus, here's a little backstory:

When I first launched my website, it was like shouting into the void of the internet—crickets, tumbleweeds, you name it. No one could find me in Cyprus, and I was pretty much invisible in local search results.

Fast forward to today, and my website now ranks for various local search queries like “SEO Analysis in Cyprus.”:

So, how did I go from being lost in the digital wilderness to being a local SEO success? Here’s the journey:

- Google My Business (GMB) Optimization: The first step was setting up and optimizing my GMB listing. I made sure all my business details were accurate, added high-quality photos, and regularly updated posts.

- Targeting Local Keywords: I researched and incorporated location-specific keywords into my website content, meta descriptions, and titles. Phrases like “top-rated gym in Nicosia” and “Limassol yoga studio” were game-changers.

- Building Local Citations: I listed my business in relevant local directories, ensuring that my name, address, and phone number (NAP) were consistent across all platforms. This boosted my local visibility significantly.

- Encouraging Reviews: Positive reviews are gold. I asked happy customers to leave reviews on my GMB, TripAdvisor, and other review sites. Responding to reviews—both good and bad—showed that I value customer feedback.

- Creating Local Content: I started blogging about local events, news, and attractions. This not only engaged my audience but also attracted local traffic to my website.

- Mobile Optimization: I made sure my website was mobile-friendly since a majority of local searches happen on mobile devices. Fast loading times and a responsive design were key.

Step #1: Local Keyword Research for Cyprus

The Local SEO process begins with a Cyprus-focused keyword research.

Here’s exactly how to find the right keywords for your local SEO strategy:

First, generate a list of keyword ideas.

Your first step is to generate a big list of potential keywords.

(In the next step, I’ll help you find the best keyword from your list.)

One of my favorite strategies is to use Google’s Autocomplete feature.

All you need to do is head over to Google and pop in a word or phrase in the search box…

...and Google will hand you a bunch of keywords related to what you typed in:

These suggested keywords are GOLD.

Why?

Because these are search terms that people actually type into the Google search bar.

So there’s no need to wonder whether a search query is popular or not. If Google suggests them to you, they definitely are.

You can also go to a popular local business in your niche… and copy the same keywords that the business is optimized around.

As you probably know, keyword optimization is a KEY part of local SEO. So if a business ranks high in local searches, chances are, that business is optimized around popular keywords.

To execute this step, go to another local business’s website in your niche, and press F12.

Then, check out their content and metadata.

This will show you the keywords that they have optimized their website for:

Next, choose a keyword from your list. Obviously, you want to pick a keyword that you can create amazing content around (more on that in step #2).

But in general, if the keyword is relevant to your niche, it’ll work.

Finally, see which keywords that local business is optimized around. This is easy.

Just check out the keywords they use in their titles, descriptions, and meta tags.

You can also find some excellent keywords in your Google Analytics “Organic Search” report. This report shows you all the keywords that users have searched for to find your website.

In many cases, these are keywords that you already know about (because you optimized your website around them).

But sometimes you’ll find a handful of keywords that you never would have thought of.

For example, here’s an example of a keyword I found in my “Organic Search” report:

This is a keyword I would have NEVER found using any other strategy. But I know that people are searching for it on Google, so it makes for a great keyword to add to my list.

Second, find the best keyword from your list.

Now that you’ve generated a list of keywords, it’s time to choose the best one from your list.

Specifically, you want to target low-competition keywords.

This is ESPECIALLY important if your website doesn’t have that much authority yet.

If you swing for the fences and go after competitive keywords, your website is gonna get buried in the search results.

Instead, you want to find keywords that don’t have a lot of competition.

How do you check?

All you need to do is:

Search for your keyword in Google.

And check out the “About results”:

This number represents the total number of web pages on Google about that topic. The higher this number, the more competitive a keyword is. So you want to target keywords that have a low “About results” number.

(How low should you go? Every industry is different. So I can’t give you a specific number to shoot for. Just focus on choosing keywords that have low competition relative to other keywords in your niche.)

For example, when I search for “Cyprus SEO,” there are 9,470,000 results:

That’s a lot.

So if I was just starting out, I’d try a few other keywords, like “Best SEO Agency Limassol.”

Bingo! That keyword only has 74,700 results.

And that means that this keyword is MUCH less competitive.

Finally, a bonus tip: search for your keyword in Google.

Here’s the deal:

Most traffic to local businesses comes from within the local area.

But don’t stop there. Your website can get 2-5x more traffic if you can ALSO get it to rank in Google.

How?

The trick is to optimize your website around keywords that already have local results in Google.

You see, Google only includes local results in the search results for certain keywords.

Unlike a “normal” first page with 10 web page results, Google sometimes reserves a good chunk of the first page for local results:

In general, Google tends to use local results for these types of keywords:

- How-to keywords (“how to find a lawyer in Limassol”)

- Reviews (“best coffee shop in Nicosia review”)

- Services (“plumber in Paphos”)

- Anything local business-related (“Limassol hair salon”)

- Local attractions (“Cyprus museums”)

Why is this important?

Well, let’s say you optimize your website around a keyword that doesn’t have any local results in Google. In that case, you’ll ONLY get traffic from people searching within your local area.

But if you optimize for a local keyword, you’ll also get targeted traffic to your website directly from Google’s first page.

The question is:

How do you find these magical keywords?

All you need to do is search for one of the keywords you found in the last step.

Then see if any of the keywords you searched for have local results in Google, like this:

Simple, right?

Once you’ve found a local keyword, it’s time to see if there’s any search volume for that keyword. Otherwise, you might rank in Google for a keyword that only gets 20 searches per month. That’s not worth it.

So make sure your target keyword gets at least 100-1k searches per month in Google (you can find this information using the Google Keyword Planner):

Why 100+ searches per month?

If you can get that website to rank in Google, then a lot of those searchers will click on YOUR website in the results.

That means you’ll get more high-quality traffic to your website, and ultimately, more local customers.

Here’s a real-life example:

Because my business is in the SEO niche, I’m going to look for local keywords using searches like “SEO services in Limassol”, “Limassol SEO agency” and “SEO consultant in Cyprus”.

Bingo! The keyword “SEO services in Limassol” brings up 3 local results in Google:

Sure enough, that there other keyword I should also consider, exceeds our minimum of 100 monthly searches:

So that would be a great keyword group to optimize my website around.

In fact, I already did. 😊

Speaking of optimizing your website…

Step #2: Publish High-Quality Local Content

Here’s the truth:

If you want your local business to rank in Cyprus, you need to keep people engaged.

The quality of the content you publish on your website and online platforms is crucial for your local SEO success.

First, create valuable content that resonates with your local audience.

High-quality content doesn’t require a fancy setup or high production values. What matters is that your content is valuable and interesting to your audience. This can include blog posts, videos, infographics, and more.

For example, if you own a coffee shop in Limassol, create content about the best coffee brewing techniques, local coffee events, or even a guide to the best coffee spots in Limassol.

Second, focus on Audience Engagement.

Engagement metrics such as comments, shares, and likes are significant indicators of content quality. When people engage with your content, it sends a strong message to search engines that your content is valuable.

Encourage your audience to leave comments on your blog posts or social media updates. Respond to these comments to show that you value their feedback and foster a sense of community.

Third, make use of Social Media.

Social media platforms are powerful tools for driving traffic to your website and engaging with your local audience. Share your content on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and use location tags to boost visibility.

Fourth, optimize for Click-Through Rate (CTR).

The CTR is the percentage of people who click on your content in the search results. A higher CTR means more traffic and better rankings.

Create compelling titles and meta descriptions for your blog posts and pages. Use engaging images and clear calls-to-action to encourage clicks.

Fifth, ensure your content is Mobile-Friendly.

Just like YouTube transcribes videos to understand their content, search engines use various on-page elements to understand your website's context. Make sure to include your target keywords throughout your site.

Your page titles and meta descriptions play a crucial role in local SEO. The title of your webpage should be at least 5 words long to include your full keyword naturally.

For example, for a local business targeting "best coffee shop in Limassol," you might use a title like: “Best Coffee Shop in Limassol - Fresh Brews Daily”.

Your webpage content should be informative, engaging, and optimized for search engines. This means including your target keyword within the first 100 words, and ensuring the content is at least 300 words long. Here’s a basic guideline:

- Include your keyword in the first 100 words

- Make the content at least 300 words long
